‘Sculpture(s) for the birds’ embraces a pejorative idiom (it’s Shit! Absurd! It’s for the birds!) and makes the phrase literal with a benevolent intent: one that’s not only aesthetic, but functional.
Making sculpture for birds is a tongue in cheek way of acknowledging the practical challenges of making sculpture, along with the existential questions about producing more objects in an already saturated (art)world.
These sculptures - some static basins and some bubblers (mimicking jacuzzi jets and maximizing attraction for birds) - combine high and low aesthetics (suburban lawn ornament meets contemporary sculpture park). They are made for the public good. They are sites of renewal.
